Standard Illegality

Asked by Exodus20317 9 years ago

I just input one of my real-life decks to this site in hopes of getting feedback, but when I finished and saved, the site told me that the deck is not Standard Legal due to containing three illegal cards, Murmuring Phantasm, Mizzium Skin, and Hidden Strings. I had no idea these cards were illegal, but when I checked the official Banned and Restriced list here, it said that there are no cards illegal in Standard mode. So why are my cards marked as illegal?

The Return to Ravnica block is not Standard legal. Standard only includes the two most recent blocks (currently Theros and Khans of Tarkir) and any core sets released after the older block (currently Magic 2015).

Cards are only listed as banned if they would be legal in a format based on printing, but have been manually banned from that format. Cards that aren't legal in a format aren't necessarily banned from that format.

For reference, this page will always list the sets legal for use in Standard.

Standard is a rotating format. This means that only the two most recent blocks and the core sets right before them are legal. In this case all of the cards you listed are from RTR block which rotated out of standard last september. Currently the only sets that are legal in standard are Theros, Born of the Gods, Journey to Nyx, M15, Khans of Tarkir, and Fate Reforged. The other sets aren't banned they just aren't legal. The B&R list is only for cards that would normally be legal.
