[standard format] If I cast an Engulf the Shore...

Asked by mtgonceagain 7 years ago

and I have four islands, and the opponent has a Lambholt Butcher, does it return to their hand as Butcher or does it return to their hand as Pacifist or does it go to their graveyard? I know it has a converted mana cost of 2, but does that mean it is not considered a token? Thanks so much in advance!!!!!

Please link all cards in your question: Engulf the Shore, Lambholt Pacifist  Flip, Lambholt Butcher  Flip.

Engulf the Shore looks at toughness, so the Butcher would return to hand, and become 'untransformed'.

You can use double square brackets to link cards. It saves everyone time and trouble because you don't have to explain all the cards and the readers don't have to go look them all up. Engulf the Shore, Lambholt Pacifist  Flip

Cards and tokens are two different kinds of object. The Lambholt Pacifist card in your example is always a card. Only things made by effects that specifically say they create "tokens" (Dance with Devils, Drownyard Explorers, etc.) are considered to be tokens. Engulf the Shore will return the Pacifist/Butcher to your opponent's hand.

A double-faced card can only have its back face showing while it's on the battlefield and transformed. In every other zone it defaults back to the front face. In your example the Butcher will go back to being a Pacifist when it's in your opponent's hand.
