Spellskite and Cryptic Command?

Asked by clayperce 7 years ago

In a game on MTGO this evening, my opponent cast Cryptic Command, choosing to Counter target spell (a pump spell of mine) and Return target permanent to its owner's hand (targeting my Blighted Agent). I had a Spellskite on the battlefield, and though I knew I couldn't stop the 'Counter target spell' mode, I thought I could redirect the 'Return target permanent' mode to the Spellskite. Two life points later, both my opponent and I were very surprised it didn't work. Is this a MTGO bug? And if not, could someone please explain?

Thanks in advance!

Well, that should work as described. It sounds like either MTGO bugged out, or there was a misclick somewhere. Knowing the client, it was probably a bug. You are correct in that it should have worked as you intended.

Definitely a bug, the fact that Cryptic Command has multiple modes wouldn't stop you from using Spellskite or Standard Bearer effects from changing the targets of any targeted modes of the spell.
