Spawnsire of Ulamog in edh

Asked by firemanefruitcake 9 years ago

the rules on gatherer state in a casual format, the eldrazi you play are from your personal collection outside the game. EDH deck building rules state only one copy of a card can be included in your deck. If i used the 20 mana ability of Spawnsire of Ulamog could i fetch and play a playset of Ulamog's Crusher?

I'm really not sure if there's an official answer on this or not, but my feeling is that you should still adhere to EDH's singleton format and only get 1. The other question is, can you fetch from outside the game duplicates of eldrazi in your decklist? Here I would also guess "no." How does your playgroup feel about it?

In competitive play they would need to be in your side board. The side board is 10 cards in edh and must comply with the 1 of rule, unless it's a basic land or the card specifies otherwise (ie Relentless Rats).

addaff But firemanefruitcake is asking about casual, right?

my playgroup is unaware of it and i really do imagine they wouldn't be ok with it. MAYBE they would be ok if we follow competitive sideboard rulings though we are a very casual group (IE: just playing during lunch and free periods at school)

He was referring to the rule on gatherer "In a casual game, the cards you cast from outside the game come from your personal collection. In a sanctioned event, those cards must come from your sideboard. Note that you can't cast cards from exile this way; exile is a zone in the game."

Now if your playing casual edh with a group of friends, just ask them. It should be easy to narrow your eldrazi sideboard down to 10 if they are not ok with having multiples of 1 card

so its pretty much down to ethics

If they are not ok with the sideboard just roll with it anyways. Your following the rules of the card and format. Just expect to be targeted by everyone once and any future games after you pull it off.

@addaff: This is what the RC says about it.

Abilities which refer to other cards owned outside the game (Wishes, Spawnsire, Research, Ring of Ma'ruf) do not function in Commander without prior agreement on their scope from the playgroup.

Some more competitive groups add a sideboard to bring flexibility to their decks and combat some of the degeneracy. The most common structure of sideboards is:

  • Players may bring a 10 card sideboard in addition to their 99 cards and 1 Commander.
  • After Commanders are announced, players have 3 minutes to make 1-for-1 substitutions to their deck.

In groups whose members all use sideboards, they can also be used to wish for cards that are outside the game.

Wishes/Spawnsire do not work in 'official' EDH. The ruling quoted earlier was from before the Exile zone existed. If your group wants to let you get stuff out of your binder, that's up to you all, but don't expect to go to an EDH event of any kind and have them work.

Wish effects do not function without prior approval from the playgroup.
