So, if I'm at 20 health and then cast Madcap Experiment with Soulfire Grand Master in play, will I die if I fail to find an artifact within 20 cards?

No. Lifelink causes you to gain life concurrently with damage. So if you were dealt 21 damage in this case, you'd gain 21 life at the same time.
