Soulfire Grand Master + Anger of the Gods?

Asked by Annro 9 years ago

If I had a Soulfire Grand Master on the battlefield and then cast Anger of the Gods, would the lifelink trigger or would Grand Master be dead and I would gain no life?

Thanks!

First, lifelink is not a triggered ability. It's a static ability. You gain the life as you deal lifelink damage.

Second, creatures are not destroyed due to lethal damage until state-based actions are checked. SBAs don't check in the middle of resolutions. Even if they did, Anger of the Gods deals damage to all affected entities simultaneously. Soulfire Grand Master will still be on the battlefield as Anger of the Gods deals damage.

This question doesn't really have anything to do with steps or phases. What it's really about is the resolution process and state-based actions.

I actually have a better combo for you, Blasphemous Act + Soulfire Grand Master

Not Standard legal. That might matter.

I pulled this off in a modern game today against a soul sister deck. He had 19 creatures out and I had 6 including Soulfire Grand Master. I Boros Charm'd and casted BA, proceeded to gain 325 life.
