So I have a question about Zada, Hedron Grinder?

So I am running an allies deck with Zada, Hedron Grinder and my friend was telling me how he wants to build a deck using him and Swell of Growth. I looked to see how many cards I have that target creatures and I found Thrive and I wondered what happens if Zada, Hedron Grinder copies a spell with X in the cost and how that would work.

So because it has to be 1 and only target Zada, Hedron Grinder it would be 1 for all of my creatures, correct?

In the case of Thrive, yes, you would need to cast it for x = 1 so that it could target Zada alone. That's actually a clever way to get that effect for all of your creatures but at the cost of only one instead of having to pay for all of them.

That is why I figured I would double check it... and two mana to give all my creatures a +1/+1 counter didn't sound bad.

Common Bond would work better I think. You can target Zada both times, and his ability will trigger, copying it and putting 2 +1/+1 counters on your creatures.

Yes it would and I may throw that in the deck as well since I believe I have an extra copy.

Also, always check Gatherer for rulings that would answer your questions:
8/25/2015 If the spell thats copied has an X whose value was determined as it was cast (like Rolling Thunder does), the copies have the same value of X.
8/25/2015 If you cast an instant or sorcery spell that has multiple targets, but its targeting only Zada with all of them, Zadas ability will trigger. The copies will similarly each be targeting only one of your other creatures. You cant change any of the copys targets to other creatures.

While it is on the stack, a spell with x in the cost does have a value for x. This value will remain the same for the copies of the spell.
