Simple question about responding to activated abilities

Asked by Lord007 9 years ago

Simple situation here, opponent activates Grim Lavamancer , I respond by Path to Exile the Lavamancer. Do I take the 2 damage?

Yes, since the ability and the source of the ability can work independently.

So even though Grim Lavamancer is in exile when it deals the ability resolves, and deals 2 damage to me, the damage still happens?

Since the ability was fully paid for, it will resolve even if the source is no longer there.

Abilities on the stack exist independently of their sources. Removing the source of the ability will not prevent the ability from resolving.

Grim Lavamancer 's ability will resolve and deal 2 damage to you. The ability will use Grim Lavamancer 's last known information (LKI; the characteristics of Grim Lavamancer as it last existed on the battlefield) to determine if anything modifies the damage.

To make this concept easier to understand, think of it as if Grim Lavamancer threw a rock on you. The fact that you shoot him in response doesn't make the already airborne rock misteriously disappear.
