Sharuum the Hegemon Combo

Asked by Brad7986 8 years ago

I have a good understanding of the rules but this interation i dont quite understand Sculpting Steel + Sharuum the Hegemon . from what i know the legend rule is checked when state based effects are checked and state based effects are checked when a player would recieve priority. so sculpting steel enters and copys sharuum and the trigger would be put on the stack imidiatly and require a target before a player would recieve priority, so then how can it target something in the graveyard then change the target to sharuum/sculpting?

Basically, you allow the trigger for Sculpting Steel to resolve. Then you instantly kill Sharuum the Hegemon with the legend rule while the new Sharuum etb effect is on the stack. This creates an infinite loop.

Think of how Amulet Bloom and any of the bounce lands work. You can tap in response to the ETB Trigger. This allows the land to etb and have an effect before the etb trigger.

sculpting steel trigger? u mean the copy effect?

and as I said in my question that the trigger from the "steel Sharuum" would require a target when put on the stack, then state based effects would be checked? maybe im misreading what you've said?

also Amulet Bloom doesnt relate to this much as the bounce lands etb dont target and the tapping are mana abilities which have specialised rules

No, it requires a target upon entering the battlefield. You choose Sharuum. To my knowledge, you get to pick which trigger (the etb from your new "Sharuum" or the death of the old one) goes first. Thus, you allow Sharuum to go to the grave and then reanimate it with the trigger. That is where the infinite combo comes in.

This combo is working indeed. Quoting Epoch from a couple of years ago:

The combo still works. You play Sharuum the Hegemon. Then, you play (or return to play) Sculpting Steel copying Sharuum. The copy's ETB ability triggers, but it isn't put onto the stack until after state-based actions happen. SBAs force you to put one Sharuum in your graveyard, and you choose to put the copy into your yard. Then, when the ETB ability is placed onto the stack, Sculpting Steel will be in the graveyard and therefore be a legal target for the ability. The combo also works with Phyrexian Metamorph.

Emphasis added for the relevant ruling.

Thank you for the clarification, and for the Emphasis, theirs always new things to learn with the rules (which can be a pain :P )
