Scion of the Ur-Dragon in relation to 'when this creature dies' effects?

Asked by Chilled_Irishman 8 years ago

I'm trying to make a Scion of the Ur-Dragon Commander deck and I'm just curious about his ability. Say if I were to use his ability to make him a copy of Yosei, the Morning Star until the end of the turn. When I reach the end of my turn and Scion of the Ur-Dragon turns back into himself, does that technically count as Yosei, the Morning Star 'dying' and activating its ability?

No. Firstly, Yosei's ability is a triggered ability that triggers upon dying.

Dying is defined as "being put into the graveyard from the battlefield".

When the copy effect ends, that's it. It just ends and the instance of copying Yosei is no longer active. The original Yosei did not die because it was put into the graveyard from the library and the copy ability does not make the "copy" change zones.

Also note that when you put your commander into the command zone it is a replacement ability. They do not die and dying effects do not trigger.

Of course you can choose not to put your commander into the command zone and let it enter the graveyard, which will then trigger dying effects. Though I'm not sure if Scion counts as it's copy or itself when it enters the graveyard, but it would be back to being Scion once it is in the graveyard.

When a copy or clone of a creature dies, any "die" abilities trigger. Then the copy/clone ceases to exists or reverts back to its default state.

For any die triggers, the game looks at whatever the creature was when it last existed on the battlefield.
