Savage Knuckleblade and his ability.

Savage Knuckleblade and his second ability: So what would happen if I blocked a 10/10 creature with Knuckleblade, and then payed mana to return it to my hand. Is this a legal play? Would I take 10? Would this be any different if the 10/10 had trample??

Once an attacking creature is blocked, it stays blocked until the end of combat, even if something happens to make all the blocking creatures go away. If the attacking creature doesn't have trample then it can't assign you any combat damage (because it's blocked). If the attacking creature does have trample, then it has to assign you all of its combat damage (because there aren't any blocking creatures to assign damage to).
