Sacrificing my commander to Rescue from the Underworld: does it matter which zone the card goes to?

Asked by ctenochaetus 7 years ago

Rescue from the Underworld: The card has "Sacrifice a creature" as an additional cost, and "return the sacrificed card to the battlefield" as part of its effect. Does it matter where the sacrificed card goes? In other words, will the effect still come in place if I return my commander to the command zone?

I'm using RftU in my Gonti, Lord of Luxury EDH deck, and might want to use it to get another Gonti trigger, but obviously if I sacrifice Gonti and send them to my graveyard, an opponent could really dash my deck for a while by countering the spell.

Remember to check Gatherer for additional rulings as it may have the answer to your questions:

9/15/2013 If either the sacrificed creature or the target creature card leaves the graveyard before the delayed triggered ability resolves during your next upkeep, it wont return.

9/15/2013 However, if the sacrificed creature is put into another public zone instead of the graveyard, perhaps because its your commander or because of another replacement effect, it will return to the battlefield from the zone it went to.

I would have assumed this question was too specialized for Gatherer. Huh. Guess I'll stop assuming that now.

Thanks, though!

I have an additional question.

Do creature that got revived and die again before Rescue from the Underworld resolve still return to the battlefield?

I'm not sure what you mean. Could you be more specific?
