Sacrifice in response to a sacrifice

Asked by Leilani312 4 years ago

I have a Seal of Cleansing on my board. My husband has a Seal of Primordium and a Thopter Spy Network on his board. I sacrifice my card to blow up His Thopter Spy Network . Can he sacrifice his seal to stop mine from resolving and save his enchantment?

No, he cannot.

Part of the cost for activating the Seal of Cleansing 's activate ability is to sacrifice itself. Before the activated ability is put to the stack and your opponent gets priority to respond, the Seal of Cleansing will already be in the graveyard.

For reference activated abilities are worded with {cost}:{ability}. As with spells or activated abilities in Magic, the cost must be paid before the item can be put onto the stack to be responded to.

Sorry, actually activated abilities (like spells) are put onto the stack and then you pay costs. I missed the edit window.

602.2. To activate an ability is to put it onto the stack and pay its costs, so that it will eventually resolve and have its effect. Only an object’s controller (or its owner, if it doesn’t have a controller) can activate its activated ability unless the object specifically says otherwise. Activating an ability follows the steps listed below, in order. If, at any point during the activation of an ability, a player is unable to comply with any of those steps, the activation is illegal; the game returns to the moment before that ability started to be activated (see rule 721, “Handling Illegal Actions”). Announcements and payments can’t be altered after they’ve been made.

Still it doesn't change that he won't be able to destroy the Seal of Cleansing as it would be sacrificed to pay the cost before he gains priority.
