Ruling question on Devoted Druid

Asked by Johnthomis 6 years ago

I dont know if this is the right place to post this, but does devoted druids second ability activate at instant speed?

Example: if i have him out on the field since last turn and i summon joraga warcaller for 2 multi kicks. He comes out as a 3/3 giving the devoted druid +2+2. So if uninterupted i could tap it then add 3 -1-1 counters one at a time to tap and untap him for a total of 4 mana.

My question is after summoning joraga if they use a removal spell to get rid of one or the other, does it instantly go away? I can still tap the druid in response adding one to my mana pool correct? If so can i add the -1-1 at instant speed as well? So i get all the mana into my mana pool before the removal spell resolves?

Hopefully that made sense. Sorry if its kind of a silly question and thanks for the clarification.

Yes. Unless it says "use this only as a sorcery," activated abilities on creatures are instant speed.

This should go in the special Rules Q&A section, which can be accessed through the top bar. Also, remember to put double brackets around your cards to link them. For example Devoted Druid, Joraga Warcaller.

This is a pretty confusing problem, lots of people get confused by questions like this. Basically, you're paying the cost of putting -1/-1 counters on Devoted Druid, so no matter what happens, he will have those counters. However, if someone kills Devoted Druid before his ability resolves, you will not get the mana because he will be dead. If they allow Devoted Druids ability to resolve, you will have a 0/2 and 2 green mana.

Likewise, if someone kills Joraga Treespeaker in response to Devoted Druids ability, Devoted Druid will have 0 toughness and therefore be put into the graveyard as a state-based action, meaning no mana for you. Again, if they allow the ability to resolve first, you will get the mana before it dies.

EDIT: Sorry if this answer wasn't exactly what you were looking for. Yes, you can activate Devoted Druid's ability in response to a kill spell.

For future reference you can always ask questions over on the Rules Q&A and they will be answered there as well.

Ok i just get a little confused with priority sometimes. So it would be their choice as to whether they do it before or after? I cant just usethe druid to 0 at instant speed before passing the priority and letting a Path to Exile exile it?

Specifically because of the paid cpst for activating the second ability.

So..

1) Opponent has priority. They cast Doom Blade targeting Devoted Druid. They must pass priority to you here.

2) You gain priority, and activate both of Devoted Druid's abilities then pass priority to your opponent.

3) your opponent allows Devoted Druids ability to resolve and passes priority to you.

(repeat steps 2-3 three times)

4) You pass priority back to your opponent, they allow Doom Blade to resolve, and Devoted Druid dies. You end up with four in your mana pool.
