Roon and sundial of the infinite

Asked by swkelly89 9 years ago

if i exile my opponents commander with Roon of the Hidden Realm , proceed with my turn, then cast and activitie Sundial of the Infinite , will their commander remain exiled, or do they have to option to move it to the command zone?

If a Commander would be put into a graveyard or exile from anywhere, its owner may choose to move it to the command zone instead. It doesn't matter why you're exiling it, they can still choose to move it to the command zone.

you would have to wait until the delayed trigger of the card to return to be put on the stack, then you could use the sundial to end the turn which would prevent the creature from coming back.

So it would go like this:
you would enter your end stepthe delayed trigger from roon to bring the creature back would go on the stack
you activate the sundail in response
the turn is ended and all spells / abilities on the stack are exiled.

the reason for this, is because if you end your turn before it the trigger goes on the stack, the next end step will be on your opponents turn

The opponent would need to be stupid for this to happen, as they could redirect it to the Command Zone, and Roon would still return it to the battlefield afterwards. If you got rid of the return trigger with the Sundial, it would just stay in the Command Zone.

Just to give a more complete answer:

When Roon of the Hidden Realm 's ability resolves, your opponent has the option of replacing exile with the command zone.

  • If he or she does, then his or her commander is safe regardless of whether you exile the delayed triggered ability that would return the commander to the battlefield. Worst case, the commander remains in the command zone if the DTA is countered or exiled.
  • If he or she does not, then his or her commander will be exiled. If the DTA is countered or exiled, then the commander will remain in exile indefinitely.

10/17/2013: If Roon of the Hidden Realms ability targets a commander, that card's owner may choose to have it go to the command zone rather than being exiled. The delayed triggered ability will return it to the battlefield no matter which of the two zones it went to, as long as it's still in that zone when that triggered ability resolves.

As pskinn01 said, you would need to wait until the DTA actually triggers. If you activate Sundial of the Infinite before the DTA triggers, the DTA will simply trigger at the end of the next turn.

@Devonin: The replacement effect that changes where a commander card would go is not a redirection effect.
