Rite of Replication and players leaving during a Commander game

Asked by Argy 7 years ago

If I Kick Rite of Replication copying an Opponent Creature, then that Opponent leaves the game a few turns after, do I lose all the Tokens I created with Rite of Replication?

No. All permanents owned by that player, plus their entire graveyard, exile, and command zone leave the game with that player.

A token that's a copy of one of their cards is none of those things.

"800.4a When a player leaves the game, all objects (see rule 109) owned by that player leave the game and any effects which give that player control of any objects or players end. Then, if that player controlled any objects on the stack not represented by cards, those objects cease to exist. Then, if there are any objects still controlled by that player, those objects are exiled. This is not a state-based action. It happens as soon as the player leaves the game. If the player who left the game had priority at the time he or she left, priority passes to the next player in turn order whos still in the game."

(additional clarification)

"111.2. A spells owner is the same as the owner of the card that represents it,
unless its a copy.
In that case, the owner of the spell is the player under whose control it was put on the stack. A spells controller is, by default, the player who put it on the stack. Every spell has a controller."

Basically, the owner of a copy is the one who created the copy.

That's what I thought.

Thanks for taking the trouble to explain it so thoroughly.

You're welcome, I'm glad I could help.
This rule is basically written to allow a player to leave the table and take all their cards and tokens with them, so they're free to join a different game.
