Rhonas the Indomitable and Heart of Kiran

Asked by Argy 7 years ago

I attack with two Metallic Mimics and a Minotaur Sureshot.

My Opponent has Rhonas the Indomitable, Heart of Kiran, and Voltaic Brawler.

She Crews Heart of Kiran with Voltaic Brawler. in response I kill the Heart of Kiran with Unlicensed Disintegration.

She only has one mana open, so can't activate Rhonas the Indomitable's ability,

I believe that Rhonas the Indomitable can not now be declared as a blocker, as there are no other Creatures with Power 4 or more that trigger it.

Provided you destroy the Heart of Kiran before the Declare Blockers Step, you'd be correct.

Rhonas the Indomitable would have to be able to block at the beginning of the Declare Blockers Step to be declared as a blocker. If you use Unlicensed Disintegration to destroy the Heart of Kiran during the Declare Blockers Step, your opponent would have already been able to declare Rhonas as a blocker and you would only stop the Heart from being able to block.

Note that nothing "triggers" Rhonas in this example. Rhonas has no triggered abilities. Having a creature with power 4 or greater is simply a condition that Rhonas's second ability requires you to satisfy for him to attack or block.

Follow up question.

Does Heart of Kiran need to be Crewed before the move to blockers phase?

In order to be a creature and for it or Rhonas to block? Yes.

Although there is no "move to blockers phase," and you meant the declare blockers step.

Heres a quick breakdown of turn structure:

Beginning of Turn Phase (broken down into steps)

  1. Untap step
  2. Upkeep step
  3. Draw step

Main Phase 1

Combat Phase (broken down into steps)

  1. Beginning of Combat Step
    i. Players get priority to activate spells and abilities. (If you need to make something a creature so it can attack, it needs to be done here.)
  2. Declare Attackers Step
    i. The attacking player declares all of his or her attacking creatures as a turn based action.
ii. Players get priority to activate spells and abilities. (If you need to make something a creature so it can block, it needs to be done here.)
  3. Declare Blockers Step
    i. The defending player declares all of his or her blocking creatures as a turn based action.
ii. Players get priority to activate spells and abilities.
  4. Combat Damage Step
    i. All creatures deal their combat damage as a turn based action.ii. Players get priority to activate spells and abilities.
  5. End of Combat Step
    i. Players get priority to activate spells and abilities.

Main Phase 2

Ending Phase (broken down into steps)

  1. End Step
  2. Cleanup Step
