Rhino Soon and Regal Behemoth

Asked by ChrisNicolella 5 years ago

I have a Roon of the Hidden Realm deck and I was pondering slotting in Regal Behemoth. I am not sure about how the following interaction would work though. Assume I've played Regal Behemoth, someone else attacked me and took the monarch, and now it's my turn again. I tap Roon, now the end step rolls around. I get Regal Behemoth back on my side of the board, but do I get the monarch trigger?

The only benefit to blinking the behemoth is if someone else becomes the monarch, you have a way outside combat damage to get the monarch back. All at beginning of step triggers happen at same time, and won't retrigger if the gain different triggers later.

Ideally, you would use Roon just before the end of an opponent's turn so that you're the monarch for your entire turn, not just the remainder of your end step (plus however long it takes for someone to attack you again for the monarchy). This would also allow you to get the "at the beginning of your end step" card draw for being the monarch.

The reason you wouldn't get the card draw if you use Roon on your own turn to get Regal Behemoth back is because all "at the beginning of end step" abilities trigger at the same time, at which point you aren't the monarch yet (because the trigger to put Behemoth back on the battlefield under your control hasn't resolved yet). Once the Behemoth is back and you're the monarch, it's too late to trigger your card draw because the beginning of your end step has already passed. You'd have to wait until your next turn, at which point someone else might have already taken the monarchy away from you.
