Responding to Endless Whispers by exiling the creature card from the graveyard

Asked by Cryptomancer 8 years ago

Suppose I have Endless Whispers out and one of my creatures dies. My opponent has something like Scavenging Ooze or some other card that can exile cards from the graveyard. Can they use that ability to prevent the creature from coming back to the battlefield?

My supposition is that they could as when the creature dies, the triggered ability from Endless Whispers goes on the stack but does not resolve until the end step, thus if the card is exiled from the graveyard before the end step then when the triggered ability is resolved, the card is no longer in the zone and thus the ability will be countered. Is that correct?

Thanks.

Yes, you could exile the creature and it wouldn't be returned to play. Endless Whispers causes a delayed trigger when the creature dies. The person with Scavenging Ooze simply needs to activate it before the triggered ability resolves to keep it from returning.

Slycne is correct. As an addendum though, note that the ability created by Endless Whispers doesn't get countered in this circumstance, it just doesn't actually do anything as it resolves. The only way that that ability would get countered (barring Stifle or its ilk) is if the targeted opponent is for some reason no longer a legal target as the ability tries to resolve.

Also note that Endless Whispers sets up a delayed trigger that triggers and goes on the stack during the next end step. It doesn't trigger when the creature dies and then wait on the stack for the rest of the turn. The game can't progress to the next step or phase unless the stack is empty.
