Regarding control of Volcanic Offering

Asked by wereotter 6 years ago

The question is, do I control the entire spell, including the choices made by my opponents? Obviously I don't get to pick the targets for them, but when it comes to interactions with cards like Soulfire Grand Master and Soul-Scar Mage will the 7 damage dealt to the creature of my opponent's choice also give me lifelink/deal damage in the form of -1/-1 counters?

You control the spell, which means that you control all of the effects regardless of who picks targets. If you have something out that works with damage, it will apply to all damage dealt by Volcanic Offering and not just the damage dealt to the targets you picked.

Quick note, Soul-Scar Mage has a replacement effect that replaces the damage with placing of -1/-1 damage, rather than causing the damage to be dealt in the form of -1/-1 counters (as wither would). What this means is that Soulfire Grand Master granting lifelink won't do anything, as your instants and sorceries no longer deal damage. If you have just one of the two creatures out, they do interact the way you want them to with Volcanic Offering.

That is, placing of -1/-1 counters, not -1/-1 damage, I just can't type.

Thanks, Neotrup! I did know that but just wanted to give multiple examples. My plan is to run it with Soul-Scar Mage in EDH since red has limited ways of dealing with indestructible. Just wasn't sure if my opponent's choices got my effects :)
