Rashmi and Aftermath

Asked by Zacoly 6 years ago

I understand that Aftermath cards like Commit / Memory are considered to be the CMC of the half being cast while on the stack, but, if I cast Memory as my first spell on a turn and Rashmi, Eternities Crafter's trigger reveals a Mouth / Feed, I should be able to cast both spells instantly and for free, correct?

I'm basing that on:

708.5. An effect that asks for a particular characteristic of a split card while its in a zone other than the stack gets two answers (one for each of the split cards two halves).

If I did cast both spells the Mouth / Feed card would go to exile?

If I change to order of my casts to feed, then mouth, would it go to the grave?

Sorry for such a long one, but the situation seems to be fairly convoluted.

First things first, the rules about this have recently changed (as in, just a couple weeks ago). You can get an updated version of the CR document here.

708.4. In every zone except the stack, the characteristics of a split card are those of its two halves combined. This is a change from previous rules.

Under previous rules, Mouth / Feed would have had a CMC of "3 and 4", but under the current rules it's simply 7. You won't be able to cast it through Rashmi's ability in your example.

Also, regardless of which version of the rules we're talking about, Rashmi can only ever allow you to cast Mouth. Part of the full rules text for Aftermath also says "this half of this split card can't be cast from any zone other than a graveyard". You can't cast Feed from your library.

While I'm not sure about the rules in regards to casting Mouth / Feed out of your library for free, I can say that when Rashmi, Eternities Crafter reveals it, it's CMC is 7, which is not less than Memory's 6.

"While not on the stack, the characteristics of a split card are the combination of its two halves. For example, Destined / Lead is a green and black card, it is both an instant card and a sorcery card, and its converted mana cost is 6. This means that if an effect allows you to cast a card with converted mana cost 2 from your hand, you can't cast Destined."

Edit: Ninja'd. Rhadamanthus has it though.

You certainly can't cast both halves, because only slit cards with Fuse may have both havlves cast at the same time, even then only from the hand, and Feed can only be cast from the graveyard, not the library. As for the converted mana cost, Mouth / Feed's comberted mana cost when it's not on the stack is 7. The relevant rule:

708.4b The mana cost of a split card is the combined mana costs of its two halves. A split card's colors and converted mana cost are determined from its combined mana cost.

There is no rules 708.5. The section on split cards, 708, was extensively updated with the release of Amonkhet.

I believe you're quoting the obsolete rule about a split card's mana cost. Since the Amonkhet rules overhaul, a split card has the combined mana cost of both halves as it's CMC, no longer two seperate values.

708.4. In every zone except the stack, the characteristics of a split card are those of its two halves combined. This is a change from previous rules.

708.4b The mana cost of a split card is the combined mana costs of its two halves. A split card's colors and converted mana cost are determined from its combined mana cost.

Furthermore, keep in mind that you can't cast Aftermath halves of a card from Rashmi, ever, as you may only cast them from your graveyard.
