Rancor Rules?

Asked by smackder 9 years ago

So what happens if i cast Strangleroot Geist and Rancor , and in response to me casting Strangleroot Geist the opponent casts Magma Jet targeting the Strangleroot Geist . Since Rancor would be put into the graveyard it would return to my hand right?

I feel like there is a mistake in your question. Isn't your opponent casgting Magma Jet in response to Rancor (not Strangleroot Geist ? If so, Rancor will stay in the graveyard. The reason is that because its original target is no longer on the battlefield it gets countered by rules and is put into the graveyard from the stack (not the battlefield). And if you look at Rancor , you can see that its returning ability only triggers when it's put into the graveyard form the battlefield.

@Absinthman Ah thanks, i was wondering why my opponent was telling me to put in the grave, makes a little more sense now.

Yes it would stay in the graveyard, what happens is you have Strangleroot Geist and attempt a Rancor on him. In response the opponent kills your creature while Rancor is on the stack. The working on Rancor is "when it's put in the graveyard FROM PLAY" well it never came into to play because when it tried to resolve the creature it targeted is gone. Rancor is effectively toast.
