Question using Door of Destinies

Asked by Bantha1342 6 years ago

I am building a tribal vampire deck and have included Door of Destinies in my deck. I play against quite a few "Counter Decks" where my creature spells are often countered before I can bring them into play, so here is my question concerning Door of Destinies. The card specifically states "Whenever you cast a spell of the chosen type, put a charge counter on Door of Destinies." So if I cast a creature spell of the chosen type and my opponent counters my creature spell, can I still place a charge counter on the Door of Destinies? The card just states "Whenever you cast a spell," not whenever a creature enters the battlefield. Thanks for any replies....

The casting process includes all steps from announcing the spell to paying its cost. It doesn't cover resolution.

Door of Destinies's ability will trigger and actually exist on the stack above the spell that triggered it. It won't even know whether the spell resolves or not, and it doesn't care.

You have the right idea. Door of Destinies will get a charge counter.

Countering a spell just stops it from resolving. It doesn't change the fact that the spell was cast. The Door will get a counter each time you cast a spell of the chosen type, regardless of whether or not the spell actually resolves.

Thanks guys.....that's what I thought. Those "Counter Decks" drive me crazy and maybe this will help for those creatures I can get onto the battlefield.

Please select an answer so that your question goes to the answered questions pool. And as stated before the door triggers. The process of casting a spell can be described by:

A (Announce and Place on Stack) ll

C (Choose Modes) razy

T (Targets) eens

H (How to Divide Effects) ave

T (Total Costs) ried

M (Activate Mana Abilities) agic

P (Pay all Costs) ills

You have casted the spell at "A" and therefore the door triggers, the rest of the steps dictate the resolution of said spell.

@Oloro_Magic: Note that the casting process includes all of the steps that you listed. The spell is considered cast once you've done all of those things up through paying costs. At that point, abilities that trigger when a spell is cast will trigger.

The resolution process is separate from the process you've outlined. Resolution is when the spell has its effect and is removed from the stack.
