Question about “when a creature you control dies trigger”

Asked by Redcat7264 4 years ago

So let’s say my board has Teysa Karlov , Grim Haruspex , Anointed Procession , and Ogre Slumlord . My opponents plays Planar Cleansing , and I want to know what would trigger. So would all the creatures’ deaths trigger Haruspex and the Ogre, get doubled by Teysa, and then the tokens get doubled by the Anointed possession, or what?

Teysa Karlov provides additional copies of any abilities that trigger on death, or any "leaves the battlefield" abilities, if that creature leaves by dying. She does not provide additional copies of triggers for ancillary effects that occur related to a creature dying.

When creatures die simultaneously or enter the battlefield simultaneously, they all see one another dying/leaving.

Gatherer Ruling: If a creature dying at the same time as Teysa (including Teysa itself dying) causes a triggered ability of a permanent you control to trigger, that ability triggers an additional time.

Let's break down what happens:

  1. Planar Cleansing Resolves. All permanents are destroyed; destroying a creature is a type of "dying."

  2. Destroyed is a type of death, so any death triggers occur. Teysa Karlov causes each of their abilities to trigger an additional time (see citation above). You control all these death triggers, so can order the stack in any way you want.

  3. Grim Haruspex will trigger for Teysa Karlov and Ogre Slumlord 's death. This results in four "draw a card" abilities being placed on the stack.

  4. Ogre Slumlord will trigger for Teysa Karlov and Grim Haruspex . This results in four "create 1/1 rat" triggers being generated.

  5. Anointed Procession is already in the graveyard when Ogre Slumlord 's ability resolves. As such, it will not see the Rats entering the battlefield, so will not be implicated.

Let's change the hypothetical some, and use Wrath of God instead of Planar Cleansing .

  1. Do steps 1-4 above.

  2. This time, Anointed Procession is on the battlefield when the rats enter. However, Anointed Procession is an enter the battlefield trigger field. While it is true the death triggers set the chain in motion resulting in the ETB ability being implicated, that does not make Anointed Procession 's ability an on-death trigger. As such it would not have an additional trigger (also, Teysa Karlov is dead at the time the ETB occurs).

What would happen if we added Elenda, the Dusk Rose to the board before the board wipe. Would she get counters from the death and then create that many vampires?

Both her abilities will trigger twice and go on the stack.

However, the first ability will do nothing - she does not get the counters as she is dead when the ability resolves.

The second ability will thus be based on her power when she dies, without any further counters.

Gatherer Ruling: If Elenda dies at the same time as another creature, both of its triggered abilities trigger. However, the first one won’t do anything since you can’t put a +1/+1 counter on Elenda.

Everything cdkime said is correct.

To clarify, Elenda is one of the many creatures that refer to an aspect of the creature itself as part of an ability that triggers when it dies. Whenever something like this occurs, as the creature is no longer on the battlefied, the last known information of the creature is used instead.

In the example above, even though there are triggers on the stack that would make Elenda bigger, she is already dead by the time that they go on the stack. Whenever multiple triggers that you control would trigger to go onto the stack at the same time, you get to choose in which order they go on the stack (and therefore in which order they resolve). However, because Elenda is already dead by the time these abilities go on the stack, and of course is still dead by the time they resolve, it doesn't matter their order in this case. This trigger that would have made a creature bigger before it left the battlefield doesn't have any effect after that creature has left the battlefield, and doesn't change the last known information of the creature from when it was on the battlefield.
