Question about Soulfire Grand Master Interactions

Asked by Comfordor 9 years ago

With Soulfire Grand Master ability giving instants and sorceries life link, does this only work with direct damage spells (eg Lightning Strike = Gain 3 life)?

Or Can this ability also be used with instant and sorceries that have an indirect damage ability like Arcbond?

Example;

  • 2 creatures on battlefield for each player, I block a 3/3 creature, cast Arcbond

  • Would I gain 15 life (3 creatures + 2 players)?

If the above is true, how would Soulfire Grand Master affect pump spells like Trumpet Blast?

Thanks in advance!

A spell you control with lifelink will cause you to gain life if the spell deals damage.

So, Lightning Strike deals 3 damage. You gain 3 life.

Arcbond will give you no life. Arcbond deals no damage; it causes a creature to deal damage. If that creature has lifelink, its controller will gain life.

Trumpet Blast will give you no life. Trumpet Blast deals no damage; it just makes increases creatures' power, causing them to deal more damage.

As some more examples, Anger of the Gods and Acolyte's Reward will both cause lifegain (the spell deals the damage), but Savage Punch will not (the creature deals the damage).

Just check the wording of any given spell to see what deals the damage. If it is the spell itself, the Soulfire Grand Master will cause it to gain you life.

No, ''Permanents with lifelink cause their controller to gain life whenever they deal damage...". The damage you're speaking off is dealt BY creatures TO creatures. I had the same thought as first as well.

This question, with the same example cards, as answered two days ago here.

Thanks everyone! I thought that was the case! Always best to check though!

Follow up question, if Arcbond targeted Hopeful Eidolon which has lifelink. Would the above example hold true?

Apologies I did not see the same question posted earlier

Yes. But that's not a matter of Soulfire Grand Master interacting with the cards. That's just a lifelinker dealing damage.

Then the Eidolon would be dealing the damage while it has lifelink, then the Eidolon's controller would gain life equal to the amount of damage that it deals.
