Question About Nightmare Shepherd

Asked by TangoWithTojo 4 years ago

So lets say I'm playing EDH and I have my commander out as well as Nightmare Shepherd. If my commander were to die, could I exile it to create a 1/1 copy of it and then ignore the exile effect from Nightmare Shepherd, putting my commander back into my command zone? Or do I have to exile my commander as a result of that interaction?

You can put it into the command zone instead of exile and will still get the token. The "if you do" just checks whether you started taking the action mentioned earlier and doesn't care whether the result of that action got replaced with a different result. If you let the commander go to the graveyard, choose to exile it, but replace the move to exile with a move to the command zone instead, you get the 1/1 token.

Rhadamanthus Sounds to me like a new staple for decks with black. Thanks!
