Question About Insurrection + Admiral Beckett Brass

Asked by theindigoeffect 6 years ago

Here's the premise: I have Admiral Beckett Brass on the battlefield, along with Talas Warrior, Cloud Pirates and Siren Stormtamer.

I play Insurrection, gaining control of all my opponents' creatures, and I swing out with everything except my general. Furthermore, my opponents have no way of mitigating combat damage.

For the sake of argument, let's assume that I'm not dealing lethal combat damage to anyone, and I'm hitting one opponent with three pirates, causing Admiral Beckett Brass's ability to trigger.

In this scenario, would I be able to retain any creature permanents after my turn is over, considering I already have control of them via Insurrection, or would the aforesaid creatures return to my opponents at the end of my turn?

Admiral Beckett Brass will trigger and require you to target a nonland permanent controlled by the player you dealt damage to with your three pirates. That player should not control any creatures, thanks to your Insurrection, so you'll have to target an artifact, enchantment, or planeswalker. If they control no nonland permanents, the ability will be removed from the stack because you could not choose a legal target. You cannot choose a creature that they own but do not control, though you could (in a different situation) choose a creature they control but do not own.

If you want a scenario that presents the dilemna you are thinking of:

  1. Cast Insurrection stealing Memnite

  2. Activate an Aladdin which you own on the stolen Memnite.

At the end of the turn, due to how the layer system works, you retain control of Memnite. I could probably go in depth, but if I dive too deep into the layer system the explanation could be both very large and likely very wrong (layers are confusing)

You know I was looking at this and you could potentially take control with insurrection, hit them with all your stuff, return their creatures first and then take one with the admiral. I think it would work because you can choose the order end of turn based effects resolve. On a side note, Sundial of the Infinite would allow you to abuse insurrection even more

@Monomanamaniac: The reason that doesn't work is because there are two different steps in the End phase: end and cleanup. Admiral Beckett Brass triggers at the beginning of the end step, but "until end of turn" and "this turn" effects don't wear off until the cleanup step. The opponent won't have regained control of any of the stolen creatures at the time Admiral Brass triggers. Sundial of the Infinite also doesn't work because it skips the turn straight to the cleanup step (causing the control-changing effect to end).

Insurrection States until end of turn and Sundial of the Infinite clearly states that until end of turn effects end (but are not resolved)

Right, the effects that say "gain control of them until end of turn" and "they gain haste until end of turn" end.

That's not what "resolve" means. To resolve a spell or ability is to carry out all the instructions from a spell or ability currently on the stack and then remove it from the stack after you're done. For example, Player A casts Insurrection and moves it to the stack. No one has any responses, so it starts to resolve. Player A untaps all creatures and gains control of them until end of turn and the creatures gain haste until end of turn. Insurrection is now finished resolving and is put into the graveyard.
