Question about countering creatures

Asked by GlissasTraitor 9 years ago

If I use a card such as Zombify then can that creature be countered by a spell that says "Counter target creature spell"? (I cant remember the name of this blue card) Im not sure as the creature would technically already be in play correct? As it is in my grave therefore in the game. Also Im not casting him, Im casting the sorcery. Maybe Im wrong. Pls help

You're right. Zombify doesn't tell you to cast the creature from the graveyard, just to move it directly to the battlefield. The only spell involved in this example is Zombify, itself.

The only spell being cast in this situation is Zombify , which, when it resolves, would put the creature directly into play. This is different from casting the creature spell, where it would actually be on the stack and then enter play after it resolves. Your opponent can counter the Zombify , but they cannot stop the creature from entering play with their Essence Scatter .

You're also drawing a false distinction between being in your hand and being in another zone (or, as you call it, "in the game"). A counterspell can counter a spell (hence the name). Spells exist on the stack. It doesn't matter whether the card originates from the hand or from the graveyard; if it goes onto the stack, it's a spell. If it is put directly onto the battlefield, then it isn't a spell.
