Question about Arc Blade's second trigger ability

Asked by angelus0509825 5 years ago

Scenario:

Arc Blade's last time counter was removed during my upkeep and in response to that i copied it with Reverberate and i have Pyromancer Ascension in play with 2 quest counters

  • Will the copies have second ability trigger when the copy of the spells resolves?

  • Will i create more copies of Arc Blade in my succeeding turns?

The copies of Arc Blade will be copies of the spell, however, even though Arc Blade states to remove Arc Blade from the game with three time counters on it, you will not create more copies that will continue producing more spells. The reason for that is that if a copy of a card is in any other zone other than the stack or the battlefield, it ceases to exist.

706.10a If a copy of a spell is in a zone other than the stack, it ceases to exist. If a copy of a card is in any zone other than the stack or the battlefield, it ceases to exist. These are state-based actions. See rule 704.

It should also be noted that the only "triggers" on the card are directly related to Suspend itself. Triggered abilities have "when," "whenever," or "at" in their text. Suspend contains two (removing a time counter "at the beginning of your upkeep" and casting the spell "when the last time counter is removed"). The actual spell itself has none.

That being said, as mentioned, when the copies of Arc Blade resolve, they are exiled, at which point they cease to exist because they are copies, the same way token creatures cease to exist when exiled. Only the original physical-card copy will be suspended.

On the next turn that Arc Blade comes out of suspend, it's cast again, so you would get at least another copy from Pyromancer Ascension unless that's been removed since then, and you could Reverberate it again if you had another, but you're not going to get exponentially increasing numbers of Arc Blade copies.
