Quarantine field + Doubling season? And similar interactions

Asked by griffstick 6 years ago

I few questions about this interaction Quarantine Field has counters on it that a lot of people over look. The card could have been a a rare but it's a mythic rare because of the counters that make more great interactions that make this card great and a mythic rare. Now tell me if I'm wrong. If im right just say so and if im missing any other interactions just let me know. Now if Doubling Season is in play (or any other card like it) when I cast Quarantine Field for say 10 XX, it would enter the battlefield with 5 counters on it, exiling 5 nonland and things but with Doubling Season it will enter with 10 counters. If this interaction is correct then it would exile 10 nonland things instead. I'm pretty sure that works but I could be wrong. But what about Strionic Resonator could I pay the 2 and tap it to copy the ETB trigger to exile double the amount. Does this work and how many counters do i get plus what other cards work like this with Quarantine Field?

You're correct on both counts.

Because Quarantine Field enters with counters on it, cards that double counters on enchantments will apply. If you declare X=5 (costs are based on the value you declare for X, not the other way around), those 5 counters will be doubled to 10 as Quarantine Field enters the battlefield.

Strionic Resonator can be used to copy the exile trigger (note that the first ability, which puts counters on Quarantine Field is a static ability and therefore can't be copied) and exile another set of permanents.

Note also that the second ability checks the number of counters on Quarantine Field as the ability resolves, meaning you can use activated abilities and spells in response to the ETB trigger to modify the number of counters on Quarantine Field and therefore the number of permanents you exile.

Note that Quarantine Field's first ability isn't a static effect, but rather it's a replacement effect that modifies how it enters.

Most replacement effects are static abilities, such as Quarantine Field's ability. Some are the result of a spell, activated, or triggered ability's resolution. Static Ability or Replacement Effect are both appropriate terms for this situation. Because the targets are chosen as soon at the ability is put on the stack, adding or removing counters won't actually change how many things you exile. From Gatherer:

8/25/2015 Use the number of isolation counters on Quarantine Field as its triggered ability is put on the stack to determine how many targets you may choose. Once the targets are chosen, the number of targets the ability has is locked in. Changing the number of isolation counters on Quarantine Field wont change how many nonland permanents are exiled.

@Neotrup Use the number of isolation counters on Quarantine Field as its triggered ability is put on the stack to determine how many targets you may choose. This means the combo will work on both accounts.

And then it says this and I'm confused

Once the targets are chosen, the number of targets the ability has is locked in. Changing the number of isolation counters on Quarantine Field wont change how many nonland permanents are exiled. @Neotrup I think it's referring to proliferate or any other way of adding counters after it's all resolved right?

Changing the number it enters with, such as with Doubling Season will let you hit more (or less) targets. Changing the number after it triggers but before it resolves, such as with Proliferate or Hex Parasite will not change the number of targets. Changing the number of counters after it resolves will also do nothing.

Good catch. I don't know why targeting completely slipped my mind.
