Pyromancers goggles + discard and madness cards

Asked by krunchyfrogg 7 years ago

Let's say I use Pyromancer's Goggles to cast Tormenting Voice.

I choose to discard Fiery Temper, and pay its madness cost. Since Pyromancer's Goggles duplicates Tormenting Voice, do I need to discard two cards? Or can my single copy of Fiery Temper be used twice?

Pyromancer's Goggles would not make you discard two cards if you use the mana to cast Tormenting Voice.

Some cards, like Tormenting Voice have additional costs. These are added onto whatever you pay for the mana cost, or an alternate cost such as casting without paying its mana cost. Pyromancer's Goggles doesn't have you cast the new copy you make, but instead just puts it on the stack. If it were to have you cast the copy, it would be worded like how it is for Isochron Scepter.

For the last one, I'm not sure what you mean by if your Fiery Temper can be used twice. Once a resource has been used to pay a cost, it can't be used to pay another cost. Likewise, once you cast a spell, you can't cast the same card while it's on the stack. If you had two Fiery Tempers and discarded them both to something like, say, Mind Rot, then you could use them both, but you wouldn't be able to use those two cards to cast the spell three times, if that makes sense.

When I asked if Fiery Temper could be used twice, I was asking if one card could be used to pay the cost of Tormenting Voice twice. This was contingent upon needing to discard two cards, which I do not need to do.

Thank you for a quick and clear response!

Oh okay, yeah that can't happen regardless. It'd be like trying to use the same to cast two Llanowar Elves. Once a resource is used for a cost, it can't be used for a different cost.

Okay, so just to be perfectly clear: if I use the Goggles to cast Tormenting Voice (and use Fiery Tempers madness ability with the discard), I am drawing a total of 4 cards and doing a total of 3 damage to one target, correct?

Yup, that would be the end result if no other spells are cast or abilities activated or triggered.
