Putrify on Spell Queller while enchanted with Curse of Exhaustion

Asked by NicS18 7 years ago

Had this come up in a casual game recently and wasn't sure what to do. I exiled a spell with Spell Queller. Controller of that spell was enchanted with Curse of Exhaustion when they played Putrefy targeting Queller. Obviously since they cast Putrefy, that was their one spell per turn. Does the exiled spell remain in exile or would it fizzle and go to the graveyard?

Thanks

They are unable to even cast the spell so it will remain in exile. "fizzle" is slang for being countered due to the rules of the game. Since it was never cast it can't fizzle.

If a player is given a choice ("you may..." etc.) they can't choose an illegal or impossible action. In your example the player can't cast any more spells this turn, so they can't choose to cast the spell exiled by Spell Queller. It stays in exile.

For completeness: there's one exception to the "can't choose an impossible action" rule. A player is allowed to choose to draw cards if their library contains less than the number of cards they would draw. Barring Laboratory Maniac, Angel's Grace, or other shenanigans, this will cause the player to lose the game.
