Psychic Battle + Haunted Crossroads Interactions

Asked by UniqueUserID 8 years ago

Some questions regarding these two cards. It's confusing the heck outta me.

I control both Psychic Battle and Haunted Crossroads in all examples.

1) My opponent plays a spell that targets. If I use Haunted Crossroads do we also reveal ANOTHER card to determine who controls Haunted Crossroads effect?

2) I want to use Haunted Crossroads to reorder the top of the library when I have priority and nothing is on the stack. So we fight and reveal to see if I can do this? What is stopping me from chaining this endlessly? Am I just revealing the same card over and over?

Psychic Battle's ability triggers whenever a player chooses one or more targets. The ability doesn't specify that the targets must be part of a spell or an ability, so it doesn't care why you chose them. It'll trigger for both spells and abilities.

Psychic Battle's ability also doesn't specify what you do with the revealed card, so you do nothing with it. It remains on top of your library.

I'm not really sure what you mean when you say "chaining this endlessly."

Sorry, I didn't explain myself very well.

What I'm trying to get away with is to use Haunted Crossroads to reorder my library so I cannot lose Psychic Battle's. But Psychic Battle triggers every time I use Haunted Crossroads.

Is there anyway to abuse the stack by activating Haunted Crossroads in a certain order so on the final resolution I can have my chosen card on top of my deck?

Not really. Psychic Battle's trigger goes on top of Haunted Crossroads's activation, the card Haunted Crossroads is targeting is not on top of your library when Psychic Battle's trigger resolves. If your opponent wins Psychic Battle's trigger they can change the target, if you win you can change the target, then Haunted Crossroads's activation resolves and puts the targeted creature on top of your library.

Basically if you win the first one you can set yourself up to win future Psychic Battle triggers, and if you lose it your opponent is likely to put low CMC targets on top. But they do have to choose a legal target, it must be a creature in your graveyard.

Psychic Battle's ability triggers when you activate Haunted Crossroads's ability; it will always be above the spell or ability that triggered it. The only way you can get a specific creature card on top of your library is to win the Psychic Battle "clash."

You could theoretically activate Haunted Crossroads's ability, resolve the Psychic Battle trigger, and then activate Haunted Crossroads's ability in response.

Alternatively, you could win the first "clash" and get a high-CMC creature card, then activate Haunted Crossroads a bunch more times if you want more creature cards.
