Priority and Responding

Asked by MESS1802 5 years ago

If I cast a creature spell at sorcery speed on my turn, am I allowed to ask my opponents if they have responses, and if they all say no, respond to my creature spell with an instant, or do I have to declare my responses before asking them for theirs?

Short answer is that you must respond first to a creature that you cast.

Long answer is that the topmost spell of the stack resolves after all players pass priority without taking an action in succession. If you cast a creature spell and then pass priority and no other player takes an action, the spell will resolve before you can do anything else. If another player does take an action, you will get a chance to respond to their action and then get a chance to respond to your own creature again. However; all opponents always get a chance to respond to everything you do and you must always be the first to respond to your own spells.

You need to make your responses first. After you cast a spell and put it onto the stack, the game gives you priority again. If you pass priority to your opponents and they also all pass then the spell will start to resolve. You won't be given priority again until after it's finished resolving.
