Players dying and the crown of doom!!!!

Asked by thejadejedi 8 years ago

When you play the card Crown of Doom, you have the option to give it to other players. At some point, a player controlling the Crown of Doom will die and all of their permanents go away...but what happens with the Crown?

-Does it return to it's owner?-What about going back to the last player to control it? since the rules state that a gain control effect stops when a player dies.-Does it leave the game and become exiled?-does something else magically happen and the world smiles with love? I'm not sure.

I looked and looked but can't find an answer...so I'm turning to the wonderful people of Tappedout for help. Thanks y'all!

Whenever a player leaves the game, all cards he owns and all objects on the stack and all effects he owns are exiled/taken from the game immediately.

When this happens, Crown of Doom will go back under control of the last person who controlled it.

Also, Pegasus's fly out of the crown, farting out rainbows when that player dies.

Thank you for a great answer :) Glad someone knew exactly what happens because the rules are very hard to find on the topic of multiplayer games and people dying.

Here's a ruling from the Comprehensive Rules of Magic. Hopefully this helps shed some light for you.

800.4a When a player leaves the game, all objects (see rule 109) owned by that player leave the game and any effects which give that player control of any objects or players end. Then, if that player controlled any objects on the stack not represented by cards, those objects cease to exist. Then, if there are any objects still controlled by that player, those objects are exiled. This is not a state-based action. It happens as soon as the player leaves the game. If the player who left the game had priority at the time he or she left, priority passes to the next player in turn order whosstill in the game.

Example: Alex casts Mind Control, an Aura that reads, "You control enchanted creature," on Bianca's Assault Griffin. If Alex leaves the game, so does Mind Control, and Assault Griffin reverts to Biancas control. If, instead, Bianca leaves the game, so does Assault Griffin, and Mind Control is put into Alex's graveyard.

Essentially, the control of any permanent is reverted back to the most recent player who had control of said permanent.

Note that if a player that leaves the game is controlling a permanent that an opponent owns, but gained control of it from a zone other than the battlefield, that permanent is exiled. See the example below:

Example: Alex casts Bribery, which reads, "Search target opponents library for a creature card and put that card onto the battlefield under your control. Then that player shuffles his or her library," targeting Bianca. Alex puts Serra Angel onto the battlefield from Bianca's library. If Bianca leaves the game, Serra Angel also leaves the game. If, instead, Alex leaves the game, Serra Angel is exiled

Wow, that really helps clear everything up. I had read over that section in the rules, but It was very hard to keep track of how it all worked. Thanks for helping me understand it.
