Placing counters with both "place twice as many counters" and "place that many counters plus one" in effect?

Asked by Mr_Radical 7 years ago

I tried to think through this logically and I went insane:

I have Hardened Scales and Corpsejack Menace in play; I cast Earthen Arms targeting the menace, what happens when it resolves?

When Earthen Arms resolves you will place 5 or 6 +1/+1 counters on Corpsejack Menace. I recommend placing 6 counters on, but the choice is yours.

To explain a little more, there are two replacement effects here: one from Hardened Scales (we'll call this HS) and one from Corpsejack Menace (CM). You, as the controller of the affected object, choose the order in which they apply.

If you apply HS, then CM, you would add 2 counters, but instead add 2+1=3 counters, but instead add 3+3=6 counters.

If you apply CM, then HS, you would add 2 counters, but instead add 2+2=4 counters, but instead add 4+1=5 counters.

To further clarify, do the replacement effects use the stack?

No. Replacement effects happen as the events they replace would happen. They're immediate and cannot be responded to.
