Palisade Giant flicker between first strike and normal strike

Asked by DARKSETH 5 years ago

Lets say a "6/6" and a "6/6 First Strike" are attacking

I block the "6/6 First Strike" with Palisade Giant and let the other "6/6" through

After First strike damage resolves:I cast Cloudshift targeting Palisade Giant

That should allow me to soak up all 12 damage without losing my Giant or any life correct?

Yes, because the Giant lost her marked damage.

She's a 2/7 and has 6 damage marked from the first striker after that part of combat. You can get priority and Cloudshift her then.

She'll come back with no damage marked and take another 6 from the other attacker during the normal damage part of combat.

It doesn't actually matter which she blocks, or even if she blocks, assuming only the information you've presented here matters. If you were concerned about combat tricks that might warrant actually blocking.

Yeah, technically you have a lot of options here.

You can block either one and Cloudshift immediately, assuming neither creature has trample, the one you blocked is still considered blocked, and will deal no combat damage to you. Then when the other hits, its damage will be redirected to the giant.

Or, you could, as you suggested, block the first strike creature, then cloudshift after damage to redirect the remainder. The only real advantage to this though is that you'd deal 2 damage to their first strike attacker. Could be relevant, depending on other factors in the game.

Or, you could block neither. First strike damage would be redirected from you to the giant, then you can Cloudshift it, then normal damage would be redirected to it.

The one thing you can't really do here is have the giant deal its damage to the non-first strike creature without dying. If it were to block the non-first strike creature, the first strike creature's damage would be redirected to the giant, then if it were to fight the non-first striker, it would die, if you were to Cloudshift it, it would survive, but never have a chance to deal its combat damage.
