Pain land Pain Redirection

Asked by Servo_Token 8 years ago

Hey guys,

So I just had a thought and was wondering if this would be a relevant play ever.

I control an Underground River and an Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver. The river says "... ~ deals 1 damage to you" when I tap it for the manas. This is damage from a source I control, so can I redirect that to my planeswalker? Does this redirection rule only apply to planeswalkers my opponents control?

Thanks guys!

It only applies to damage sourced from an opponent to your planeswalker. There is no rule that I can find regarding such a scenario in the Comprehensive Rules, but here is an article written by Mark Rosewater with the relevant information.

The part you want is this one:

DEALING DAMAGE TO PLANESWALKERS:
If a source you control would deal damage to you, you can't have that source deal that damage to one of your planeswalkers instead.

306.7. If noncombat damage would be dealt to a player by a source controlled by an opponent, that opponent may have that source deal that damage to a planeswalker the first player controls instead. This is a redirection effect (see rule 614.9) and is subject to the normal rules for ordering replacement effects (see rule 616). The opponent chooses whether to redirect the damage as the redirection effect is applied.

It isn't a direct ruling for it, but it implies that the damage must come from an opponent. You can't damage yourself and redirect it to your own planeswalker.
