Ojutai Exemplars Trigger + Untap Spell?

Asked by magicsheep 5 years ago

In a recent game, I played Ojutai Exemplars. An opponent played a removal spell (let's say Murder) targeting Ojutai Exemplars. In response to the casting of Murder, I cast Act of Heroism from my hand. My goal was to use the third ability of Ojutai Exemplars, which reads: "Whenever you cast a noncreaure spell, ... Exile Ojutai Exemplars, then return it to the battlefield tapped under its owner's control". My goal was to have the Ojutai Exemplars ability resolve first, then have Act of Heroism resolve, leaving me with an untapped 6/6 Ojutai Exemplars. However, my opponent says that Act of Heroism must resolve first, so Ojutai Exemplars would become tapped. Is this true?

The spell you cast, Act of Heroism, requires a target. Once you have that target leave the battlefield the spell Act of Heroism is invalid. Just as if you cast Cloudshift instead to avoid the Murder.

I know this doesn't answer your question exactly but it has the result of not working as is.

The way the stack works, you'd have Murder on the bottom, because your opponent cast it. Act of Heroism would be on the stack next, as your response. Casting this triggers Ojutai Exemplars, which means their trigger is on the stack above Act of Heroism, and thus resolves first, so your Exemplars would flicker before anything else happens.

Unfortunately, the Exemplars permanent that returns to the battlefield is a different permanent than the one Act of Heroism targeted, so your Act of Heroism would fizzle. Luckily for you, the same applies to your opponent's Murder.

A clarification Ixthinon and Kogarashi: If I had used a different untap spell which didn't require a target, such as Dramatic Reversal, what would change? Thanks.

Yes. Because Ojutai Exemplars's ability is the first to resolve it will be back on the battlefield tapped by the time Dramatic Reversal resolves. As Dramatic Reversal has no targets it cannot be fizzled so you'll untap your permanents without issue.

The Ojutai Exemplars, once they return, would be untapped by the Dramatic Reversal but they would also require haste to then attack. Since they are new to the battlefield once more, they are summoning sick. If that was still your plan to blink then attack.
