Nekusar

Asked by Marpy 5 years ago

Since the wording on Nekusar, the Mind Razer has it listed as two separate abilities, is it possible to hit Nekusar with a spot kill in such a way that you can draw an extra card, without losing any life?

next time, be sure to link all cards in your question.

Nekusar, the Mindrazer

i'm assuming you're referring to a situation where you're opponent controls Nekusar, the Mindrazer , and you're wanting to hit it with removal after drawing a card, but before losing life. this does not work because removing the source of an ability, does not remove the ability from the stack. you can respond to the draw trigger with a removal spell such as Terminate , but the trigger will still be on the stack and you will still take 1 damage.

Yes, but they are two separate abilities. Wouldn't you be able to let the draw trigger go on the stack, respond to it, and then kill the Nekusar before you draw, the draw resolves, and you get two free draws? Sorry, forgot the code to link cards, and using my phone.

That will sort of work, but Nekusar will still deal you 1 damage from your normal draw for the turn.

Drawing your card for the turn is one of the game's "turn-based actions". It happens at the very beginning of the draw step before anyone gets priority and it doesn't use the stack. As you draw step begins, you draw a card, which triggers Nekusar's second ability, and then Nekusar's first ability is put onto the stack. You can respond by getting rid of Nekusar, in which case you will only take damage from the first draw, not the second one.

Yes, Nekusar, the Mindrazer 's first ability is indeed a trigger. However the draw step begins with the active player drawing a card, before anything is put on the stack and before anyone gains priority. This card draw will still trigger Nekusar's second ability.

Once that first card is drawn, Nekusar's first ability will trigger for the active player, and can be responded to, but the trigger from the first card draw will still end up on the stack and deal 1 damage unless you Stifle it in some way.

But yes, you can respond to the first ability by removing Nekusar and avoid additional triggers.

112.7a Once activated or triggered, an ability exists on the stack independently of its source. Destruction or removal of the source after that time won't affect the ability.

As this question has been answered for a couple days, I have gone ahead and marked an answer as accepted. In the future, please remember to hit the "Mark as Answer" button, as this helps keep the Rules Q&A section clutter-free and allows other users to quickly identify the correct answer.

Let's say my opponent has the monarch and then draws on the end step will Nekusar then trigger and make me the new monarch

Skovkaj255: No, that won't work. The Monarch only triggers for combat damage, which is specifically the power-based damage dealt by an attacking (or blocking) creature during combat. Damage from abilities doesn't count.

FYI: If you have a question, it's much more effective to start a new question topic versus responding to a very old one. The way this site works, making a response to an old question topic doesn't move it to the top of the list, meaning the only people who will really see it are the ones who have previously replied to the topic and haven't turned off notifications for new replies.

Just one additional note to build off Rhadamanthus’ correct answer - since part of your question was “Will Nekusar then trigger”, the answer to that is yes, he will trigger. However, as said above, this damage is not combat damage so it will not transfer Monarch.
