Need clarification on 'Soldier' creature tokens

Asked by Metroid_Hybrid 9 years ago

So I was showing a guy at my LGS a Token/Human tribal decklist I was brewing to abuse Odric, Master Tactician & Xathrid Necromancer, and he told me that the soldiers produced by Raise the Alarm aren't humans at all. This surprised me since in the past I've noticed that additional creature types such as "Solder", "Knight", or "Rogue" always had something like "Human", "Goblin", "Cat", etc. beforehand, and I still had stuck in my head about how several cards from some of the original sets that read like: "Summon Soldier" or "Summon Cleric", were later changed to something like: "Human Soldier", etc. for sake of consistency I guess..

But that all aside; In a vacuum-- is a Soldier token (produced by Raise the Alarm at least..) really only a Soldier, just a Soldier, and never anything else but a Soldier (and therefore have zero interaction with Xathrid Necromancer)?

Unfortunately, I think the guy is right, but I was just wanting to get a second opinion.. And If so, is there any decent, modern legal producer of Humans other that Gather the Townsfolk?

Yes, a soldier is just a soldier, unless you have a card like Hivestone out, any tokens are exactly what they say on the card that produced them.

Off the top of my head, there are'nt really any other viable Human producers but I could be wrong

In regards to that last part, a quick gatherer search reveals http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?text=+[put]+[human]+[token]&format=[%22Modern%22] as a list of modern legal cards which produce human tokens (and a few incidental others) Most notable are increasing devotion and thraben doomsayer. Thatcher revolt also does some work depending on what you need it for, and while it does not produce human tokens, xathrid necromancer is a real notable, as it triggers off of tokens as well (and is a human itself)

You can also get funky with necromancer and a xenograft, or something to that effect, if you wanted to play something like that.

The creature is a "Soldier", never was anything else. If you want it to be a human, find a "Human" token producing card. When the "Soldier" token dies, the Xathrid Necromancer checks it's creature type, and there is no "Human" in the type, so therefore the death resolves and no effect triggers.

There are actually 7 creature cards with the type "soldier" and no other creature type (Adarkar Sentinel, Etched Champion, Soldevi Sentry, Soldevi Simulacrum, Soldier Replica, Yotian Soldier, Porcelain Legionnaire). But that is irrelevant to this discussion. When an effect creates tokens those tokens have only the specified characteristics and no others so Raise the Alarm makes tokens that are simpily Soldiers.
