Multiple instances of "Unleash".

Asked by Faiths_Guide 7 years ago

If it were possible for a creature to have multiple instances of the keyword ability "unleash", would they be redundant? (e.g. Rakdos Cackler with Unleash, unleash.)

If not it would allow the creature to enter the battlefield with two +1/+1 counters on it, correct?

As far as I know, there's nothing that grants Unleash to creatures at this time, but you maybe you're aware of that already.

The rules for Unleash suggest nothing that would make it a redundant ability:

702.97. Unleash

702.97a. Unleash is a keyword that represents two static abilities. "Unleash" means "You may have this permanent enter the battlefield with an additional +1/+1 counter on it" and "This permanent can't block as long as it has a +1/+1 counter on it."

Each ability would allow you to have the creature enter with an additional counter, so yeah, that makes two +1/+1 counters.

The ability "This permanent can't block as long as it has a +1/+1 counter on it." would be redundant, but you would be able to get zero, one, or two additional +1/+1 counters. If your designing custom cards though, I would recommend looking at making effects similar to Hardened Scales that specifically interact with Unleash rather than creating multiple instances, but too each their own.

Thanks BlueScope and Neotrup!

I agree with you Neotrup, but this is specifically for flavor purposes.
