Multiple instances of Dredge with the same card?

Asked by pedroedmarcos 4 years ago

Hey there,

I'm not used to "Replacement effects", so for me it's a bit awkward,

If I have Life from the Loam in my graveyard and I cast a Brainstorm . Can I choose to mill my deck 3 times with dredge (Milling 9 card cause I will use the dredge 3 times with dredge 3)? Or when I dredge the first time my Life from the loam will go to my hand and I'll have to draw 2 cards after?

Whenever you draw X cards, even if it's part of the resolution of the same part of a spell or ability, what you're really doing is drawing a card from your library X times. It doesn't happen simultaneously.

Dredge can replace a single instance of card draw with its mill -> return to hand effect, but after you've done it once then the Dredge card is already in your hand, so you were right the second time. If you replace the first of the three card draws with the Dredge, Life from the Loam will already be in your hand before you go to draw your second and third cards. You can instead choose to replace any the second or third draw this way.

If you had three Dredge cards in your graveyard then you could apply one Dredge to each of the cards draws, but you can only apply one of those effects per draw.

Using the same logic you can also use dredge cards that you dredge into the graveyard from the first draw replacement to replace later draws in the same spell's resolution.

I realize that the way I worded that may be a little weird. So lets give an example. You cast Brainstorm and the only dredge card in your graveyard is Life from the Loam you dredge it back to replace the first draw and one of the three cards milled is Golgari Grave-Troll . You can then use the Grave-Troll to dredge the second draw.
