Mitotic Slime with Devour?

Asked by blemay 9 years ago

Can I devour the tokens produced with Mitotic Slime as I devour it and in the end devour 7 creatures?

You can devour the tokens, but only the ones currently on the battlefield. The abilities of Mitotic Slime and the tokens that are produced are triggered abilities that trigger only when they have already been devoured and the counters have been placed on the creature with devour. It looks like this:

You currently have 2 2/2 Slime creaure tokens.

You cast a creature with Devour (say, for example Voracious Dragon because that's the only one I can think of).

The creature hits the battlefield and Devour triggers. You sacrifice the 2 2/2 Slime creatures.

Counters are added to the Voracious Dragon accrding to the number of creatures devoured. The tokens hit the graveyard and trigger their effect.

The tokens' triggered ability resolves, giving you 4 1/1 Slime creature tokens.

@GoldGhost012: Since this is a question involving triggers, I feel it relevant to point out that devour is not a triggered ability. It is a static ability which modifies how the creature with devour enters the battlefield.

Really? Because it says "as." Strionic Resonator defines abilities that use the word "as" as a triggered ability.

No, it doesn't. "As" is not a word used for triggered abilities. "At" is. Triggered abilities always include "When," "Whenever," or "At," and devour uses none of them.

As further reference, from the comprehensive rules:

702.81a Devour is a static ability. "Devour N" means "As this object enters the battlefield, you may sacrifice any number of creatures. This permanent enters the battlefield with N +1/+1 counters on it for each creature sacrificed this way."
