Melira and simultaneous persists

Asked by Magnivore 8 years ago

If Melira, Sylvok Outcast enters the battlefield with creatures with persist simultaneously, do the creatures get -1/-1 counters?

So, someone casts a board wipe and I use Cauldron of Souls to give all my creatures persist including Melira. Since she is entering with the other creatures and not there before them I don't think she would protect everyone since persist says 'they enter with' like how many Clone effects enter as that thing. Since Melira is not out already then there's not that protective area of no sickness, so I think.

You're correct. Melira's ability stops counters that would be placed on your creatures, but it only does so of Melira is on the field as those counters would be placed.

Persist is an ability that modifies how the persisting creatures enter the battlefield, so it applies just before they actually enter. If Melira is among the creatures entering, its ability won't exist at the time the replacement effect applies, so it can't stop the counters being placed.

It isn't mentioned in the original question, but FYI: because of the way Melira's ability works - it applies to a group of objects rather than just her, specifically - she will also enter the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter.
