Marchesa, the Black Rose and Undying

Asked by phc 9 years ago

So how does Marchesa, the Black Rose interact with the Undying mechanic? I'm putting together a EDH deck with her as my general, and I'm not sure if I should include undying creatures. It looks like to me their two abilities would cancel each other out, and the undying creature would remain in the graveyard.

Marchesa, the Black Rose and undying are two completely separate triggers. Undying triggers when a creature without a +1/+1 counter dies and Marchesa creates a delayed trigger whenever a creature without a +1/+1 counter dies. There is no problem with putting creatures with undying into your deck. It will just make everything even harder to kill.

Specifically, when a creature with no counters on it dies, and it has undying, Undying will bring it back with a +1/+1 counter.

Then when it dies again, because it has a +1/+1 counter, Marchesa, the Black Rose will bring it back with no counter on it.

Then if it dies again, Undying fires off again and back it comes.

It's actually a nice synergy, rather than a cancelling out.
