Marath's token ability for 0/0 creatures and collective blessing

Asked by Cloudsurfer180 9 years ago

I was looking into Marath, Will of the Wild a little more, and i was curious about two things.

firstly, would i be able to pay 0 for his X cost and remove 0 counters from him to play a 0/0 elemental token?

secondly, would Collective Blessing's ability apply before or after the creature entered the battlefield, and would it apply to a 0/0 creature before they are sent to the graveyard?

Always check the Gatherer rulings before asking a question.

10/17/2013: Marath, Will of the Wild has received minor errata. The text X cant be 0 was inadvertently omitted from the card. The correct Oracle wording appears above.

It seems WOTC didn't catch the X=0 issue until it was too late to modify the print run (or they knew beforehand and failed to QC their card design).

So no, you can't activate the ability for X=0.

To answer the other half of the question, though, Collective Blessing (and other static abilities) apply to creatures as they enter the battlefield. If you had a 0/0 (let's say a Clone that enters without copying anything), it'll enter as a 3/3. Master of Waves tokens will enter as 4/3s.
