Marath trigger Interactions, will it work?

Asked by HardcoreNoob 7 years ago

So let us say, Marath, Will of the Wild is in play as well as Ogre Battledriver , Cathars' Crusade , and Mentor of the Meek.

Now my questions is this, using Marath, Will of the Wild's abilitiy to make a 1/1 creature. All triggers stack. The ultimate point and curiosity I need to confirm is whether the 1/1 triggers Mentor of the Meek's ability or does it already enter with a +2 due to Ogre Battledriver's ability so it doesn't trigger Mentor's ability?

Second Example. let us say, Marath, Will of the Wild is in play as well as Ogre Battledriver , Cathars' Crusade , and Mentor of the Meek. BUT Marath, Will of the Wild has Illusionist's Bracers Equipped.

If I make a 1/1 creature, Illusionist's Bracers triggers and makes two 1/1 creautres instead. How will the interaction with Cathars' Crusade work? do Both 1/1 enter the battlefield at the same time? so they get the same amount of counters or do they enter the battlefield one at a time?

  1. The creature that entered the battlefield was a 1/1 so it triggers Mentor.

  2. the creatures enter one at a time and Crusade triggers as each enters so they will have an unequal amount of counters.

My guesses:

1st example: the 1/1s enter as 1/1s then are buffed to 3/1, so Mentor's ability triggers.

2nd example: Marath's ability appears to be a mana ability, so the Bracers won't trigger.

This is just to see if I can answer the questions for myself, I don't know if these guesses are true.

Darn it! I see that my second guess is incorrect. The ability is not a mana ability, the cost is paid by removing counters.

  • When the 1/1 token enters, Ogre Battledriver and Cathars' Crusade both trigger. They're not static abilities so when it enters, it will enter as a 1/1, triggering Mentor of the Meek.

  • They enter one after another, so the fist one to enter will end up with 2 +1/+1 counters and the second to enter will only have 1.

Note that if you play Raise the Alarm, they will enter at the same time, see each other, and each end up with 2 +1/+1 counters on them.

Ogre Battledriver's ability is a triggered ability, meaning it doesn't affect the new creature until the ability resolves. Therefore, the creature enters the battlefield as normal and doesn't receive the bonus until later. Mentor of the Meek will see the token as a 1/1 when it enters, so Mentor of the Meek's ability will trigger.

Illusionist's Bracers's ability is a triggered ability. When you activate Marath, Will of the Wild's ability, Illusionist's Bracers's ability triggers. When Illusionist's Bracers's ability resolves, it produces a copy of Marath, Will of the Wild's ability. This copy will then resolve giving you a token. The token will trigger Mentor of the Meek's ability, Ogre Battledriver's ability, and Cathars' Crusade's ability at the same time. All of those abilities go onto the stack above the original iteration of Marath, Will of the Wild's ability. Therefore, the first token will get a counter for itself and for the second token while the second token will get a counter for only itself. All of your other creatures will get two counters (separately) for both tokens.

@GearNoir: Just to clarify, a mana ability is NOT an ability that costs mana. A mana ability is an ability that would add mana to a player's mana pool, doesn't target anything, and isn't a loyalty ability (and, if it's a triggered mana ability, it must trigger from another mana ability). Mana abilities don't use the stack, and you can't respond to them.
