Manlands and reanimate spells?!

Lets say i have Shambling Vent as a creature in the battlefield and it dies. Can i target it with Exhume, for example? Is it okay?

Short answer: no.

When an object changes zones (in this case, goes from the battlefield to the graveyard) it loses all memory of what was before unless other wise specified. Among other things, this means:

  • spells or abilities that look for that object can't "find" it anymore, with a few specific exceptions detailed in rule 400.7.
  • it loses all counters placed on it (unless it's Skullbriar, the Walking Grave I guess).
  • ongoing effects that were affecting it cease to apply.

Last bullet point in particular means that when your Shambling Vent goes to the graveyard it ceases being a creature and is not a legal choice for Exhume.

Also worth mentioning - note that Exhume doesn't target. That means you don't have to choose a creature for it until it resolves. I understood your question, obviously, but I just thought I'd make that clear as "target" is a loaded word in Magic the Gathering.
