Liliana vs regenerate

Asked by Kappalauzius 6 years ago

I wondered if e.g. Lotleth Troll could prevent dying to the +1 ability of Liliana, the Last Hope by regenerating himself. Is that possible?

No. For a couple reason. Regeneration prevents a creature from being destroyed, meaning things that specifically say destroy, as well as it having lethal damage marked on it (like from a Lightning Bolt. What regeneration does is prevent the destruction (which is why you regenerated in the first place), remove any damage marked on it (so it doesn't die right away), tap the creature (if it's untapped), and remove the creature from combat (if it's attacking or blocking). If a creature has 0 or less toughness, it is put into it's owners graveyard, similar to having lethal damage, but it is not considered to be destroyed. Additionally, as regeneration does not remove until end of turn effects (or in this case until your next turn effects), Lotleth Troll would still have 0 or less toughness, so it would still die.

Other effects regeneration does not prevent include dying to the Legend Rule, being sacrificed, or somehow being both an aura and a creature at the same time.
